Hi there, and welcome to the very first episode of Pod Chat! This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but for a variety of reasons it never got past the idea stage.
It’s only in the last couple of months that everything’s aligned, and so here we are.
Thanks for being part of the early adopter community for the show, it means a lot, and I’ll try my best to make sure every episode (and accompanying newsletter) is as entertaining and as insightful as can be. So let’s jump in!

Apollo – the future direction for podcast apps?
One of the things Evo and I chatted about was the opportunity available to podcast app developers when it comes to innovations.
Currently, most apps do the same thing: either have a podcast added by the owner via RSS feed, or pull in from another platform’s API (much like a few apps do with Apple Podcasts).
While there might be some nice features that separate some apps – lists, drag and drop, indie-only charts, etc – for the most part they’re still the same: a repository for podcasts to be published on and (hopefully) discovered.
Apollo is different.
Instead of all podcasts, Apollo limits itself to just 7500+ shows. Not only that, but these are just fiction shows.
Apollo makes it easy for listeners of this genre to find podcasts they’re interested in, with shows tagged by genre and format, and curated by audio drama creators.
As you’ll hear when we discussed Apollo in the episode, this niche approach could give the developers a lot more scope when it comes to features that fiction podcast listeners can really benefit from, including how they present audio, how they tell a story via the app, and more.
