also: Apollo podcast app, who’s coming next to Pod Chat, and more

Hi there, and welcome to the very first episode of Pod Chat! This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but for a variety of reasons it never got past the idea stage.
It’s only in the last couple of months that everything’s aligned, and so here we are.
Thanks for being part of the early adopter community for the show, it means a lot, and I’ll try my best to make sure every episode (and accompanying newsletter) is as entertaining and as insightful as can be. So let’s jump in!
In this issue:
Episode 1 of Pod Chat, with guest Evo Terra
Apollo, a super niche podcast app
Podnews is the show sponsor for Pod Chat
coming up on Pod Chat
how to follow Pod Chat on your preferred app
Pod Chat episode 1, with Evo Terra
Evo is the host of the highly regarded Podcast Pontifications and founder of Simpler Media. Evo has been podcasting since 2004, so you can be sure he’s brought the goods when it comes to the podcasting industry today.
Every innovation has made podcasting easier. But I’m not convinced most of them make it any better. ~ Evo Terra
In the first episode of Pod Chat, we talked about a whole host of podcasting goodness, including:
the journey to diversity in podcasting
where both production and consumption are heading
does podcasting still need RSS feeds
the argument for super niche when it comes to podcast apps
how podcast hosts and app/platform developers can help move the industry forward when it comes to standardizing the industry
why indie podcasters need to do better
If you think that’s quite the collection, wait until you listen to the episode! You can do that right now by listening below.
Apollo – the future direction for podcast apps?
One of the things Evo and I chatted about was the opportunity available to podcast app developers when it comes to innovations.
Currently, most apps do the same thing: either have a podcast added by the owner via RSS feed, or pull in from another platform’s API (much like a few apps do with Apple Podcasts).
While there might be some nice features that separate some apps – lists, drag and drop, indie-only charts, etc – for the most part they’re still the same: a repository for podcasts to be published on and (hopefully) discovered.
Apollo is different.
Instead of all podcasts, Apollo limits itself to just 7500+ shows. Not only that, but these are just fiction shows.
Apollo makes it easy for listeners of this genre to find podcasts they’re interested in, with shows tagged by genre and format, and curated by audio drama creators.
As you’ll hear when we discussed Apollo in the episode, this niche approach could give the developers a lot more scope when it comes to features that fiction podcast listeners can really benefit from, including how they present audio, how they tell a story via the app, and more.
Currently in beta, you can check out Apollo here.
Podnews is the show sponsor for Pod Chat!
To say I’m excited with this update would be a severe understatement!
The leading industry publication, Podnews, is the show sponsor for Pod Chat. With more than 22,000 subscribers to its daily newsletter, and a hugely popular accompanying titular podcast, Podnews is one of the most well-known and respected names in the space.
It’s a must-read. I make sure not to miss it each and everyday. If you’re in podcast land or adjacent — it’s essential. ~ John Goforth, Magellan AI.
So to be able to announce Podnews as the show sponsor for Pod Chat is… well, I’m still letting that one sink in.
My sincere thanks to James Cridland, founder and editor of Podnews, for the support. If you’re looking for all good things podcasting, as well as jobs in the industry, events to attend, and more, head on over to Podnews to check out the latest articles and subscribe to the free newsletter.
Coming up on Pod Chat
I’m sure you’ll agree that the insights Evo shared in the first episode of Pod Chat were excellent, thoughtful, and an interesting look at where podcasting could be headed in the next few months and years.
If you enjoyed this episode, there’s more of the good stuff like that coming your way.
March 18 – James Cridland, Podnews
April 1 – Arielle Nissenblatt, EarBuds Collective
April 15 – Hari Gopalakrishna, Boomcaster
I’m also looking at doing some exclusive live streams as we head into summer, where you can get your podcasting questions answered by some of the guests from the show. Stay tuned for that!
Until the next time, stay safe, stay well, and happy podcasting!
Danny.
