Podcaster imposter syndrome (or why I almost didn’t hit publish this week)

Two among us characters, red and blue, stand together.

Hi Reader,

I nearly didn’t publish an episode this week.

Everything was done. Recorded, edited, ready to go. But right at the end, that familiar thought crept in:

“Do I actually know enough about this to be talking about it?”

It’s a strange part of podcasting.

You can do all the work, and still hesitate at the last step.

And I think a lot of us deal with that, whether we call it imposter syndrome or not.

For me, it usually shows up when I’m covering something that feels a bit more “advice-y”. Like I need to have everything figured out before I say anything.

But that’s not really how this works.

What’s helped me is shifting the goal slightly.

Instead of trying to sound like the expert, I just try to be useful.

That might be sharing something I’ve tried. Or something that worked (or didn’t). Or even just a different way of looking at something.

For example, instead of thinking:

“Who am I to talk about this?”

I’ll reframe it as:

“This is what I’ve learned so far.”

And I find that’s usually enough.

Because most people listening aren’t expecting perfection – they’re just looking for something they can take away and use.

So if you’ve ever had that moment where you’re about to publish and hesitate, you’re definitely not alone.

Just don’t let that be the thing that stops you.

Until the next time, happy podcasting.
