AI is everywhere. From voice cloning tools to episode summaries, it’s creeping into every corner of the podcast world. And while it can absolutely help you be more productive, it can also quietly chip away at your creative control if you’re not careful.
So when should you use AI in podcasting?
Use it to support your workflow
Need a transcript fast? Use AI. Want a decent first draft of your show notes or social posts? Use AI. Tools like Castmagic, Deciphr, ChatGPT, as well as Spark AI from Captivate (where I’m Head of Podcaster Support & Experience) can be excellent assistants – as long as you give them your voice and your input to shape the final version.
Be cautious when it creates content for you
If you’re using AI to write your entire script, clone your voice, or generate a guest’s answers… are you still podcasting? You might be producing a podcast-like object, but the soul’s gone. And worse – if your audience finds out, you risk losing their trust.
Protect your IP and your voice
AI tools train on whatever content you feed them and, in some cases, they retain that input. So before uploading your full episodes or raw audio into any AI system, ask:
- Is this tool transparent about how it uses my data?
- Can I opt out of training or storage?
- Do I own the output?
Your podcast is your IP. If you’re not careful, that next smart assistant you use today might be mimicking your voice or format tomorrow… without you.
So, should you use AI in your podcast? Yes – but treat it like a co-pilot, not the pilot. Keep your human voice front and centre. Use AI to support your creativity, not replace it.
And always read the fine print.
Until the next time, happy podcasting.
