Apple recently added support for video podcasts using HLS. Which naturally leads to the question:

Should you be using it?

The honest answer is – it depends.

Because while video can be a great addition to a podcast, it’s not automatically the right move for every show.

If your podcast is already video-first – or you’re recording interviews and publishing them on platforms like YouTube – then this is a fairly easy win.

You’re not creating something new.

You’re just making your content available in another place your audience might already be listening.

But if your podcast is audio-first, or you’re not currently recording video, that’s where it’s worth taking a step back.

Because adding video isn’t just a new feature to turn on.

It changes how you record, how you edit, your setup, and your overall workflow.

And if you’re doing it just because it’s new, there’s a good chance it adds more work than value.

So here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Are you already creating video, or planning to?
  • Would your audience actually benefit from watching, instead of just listening?

If the answer’s yes, then it’s worth exploring.

If not, you’re probably better off focusing on making your audio as strong and engaging as possible, and then maybe revisit video, whether that’s Apple, Youtube, or Spotify down the line.

Because new features come and go. But a clear, compelling podcast?

That’s what keeps people coming back.

Until the next time, happy podcasting.
